Kids’ Choice Sports Awards: New Categories, Talent Added: Exclusive

Rob Gronkowski, Kyrie Irving and LeBron James are among the nominees for the fifth annual show, while talent participants will include Shaun White, Lindsey Vonn and Michael Strahan.

Before kids can start voting on this year’s Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Sports Awards on Wednesday, new categories they can vote for have just been unveiled. 

Biggest kid, most valuable most valuable player (no, that’s not a typo) and play of the year are among the newly added categories for the upcoming awards, to be hosted by Houston Rockets point guard Chris Paul. 

The new categories and nominees, along with Nickelodeon’s descriptions for each one, are:

Biggest Kid (For “the funniest, most playful athletes off the field and court”)
Andre Drummond, NBA Detroit Pistons
DeAndre Jordan, NBA Los Angeles Clippers
Julian Edelman, NFL New England Patriots
Kyrie Irving, NBA Boston Celtics
Laurie Hernandez, Gymnastics
Maia Shibutani, Figure Skating
Rob Gronkowski, NFL New England Patriots
Yasiel Puig, MLB Los Angeles Dodgers

Most Valuable Most Valuable Player (Where “the MVPs from each sport are going head-to-head”)
Giancarlo Stanton, 2017 MLB National League MVP
James Harden, 2018 NBA MVP
Jose Altuve, 2017 MLB American League MVP
Sylvia Fowles, 2017 WNBA MVP
Taylor Hall, 2018 NHL MVP
Tom Brady, 2018 NFL MVP

Play of the Year (“Celebrating the most talked about, highlight reel-worthy sports plays of the year”)
Aaron Judge Hits 50th Homerun – MLB New York Yankees
Devante Smith-Pelly’s Stanley Cup Final Goal – NHL Washington Capitals
George Springer World Series Homerun – MLB Houston Astros
Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson’s Shootout Goal – U.S. Women’s National Ice Hockey Team
Kevin Durant’s ‘Déjà Vu’ Dagger Shot – NBA Golden State Warriors
LeBron James Alley Oop to Himself – NBA Cleveland Cavaliers
Nick Foles Super Bowl “Philly Special” – NFL Philadelphia Eagles
Stefon Diggs Game-Winning “Miracle Catch” – NFL Minnesota Vikings

The Hollywood Reporter has also learned exclusively that talent participants at the awards show will include professional snowboarder Shaun White, professional skier Lindsey Vonn, Michael Strahan, Double Dare’s Liza Koshy and Marc Summers, Lip Sync Battle shorties’ JoJo Siwa, Owen Joyner and Knight Squad’s Daniella Perkins. 

The Kids’ Choice Sports Awards also has a new airdate: The fifth annual ceremony will air Friday, July 20, at 8 p.m. ET/PT (it will be taped live the day before from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica). Kids can vote for their favorites on The rest of the nominees can be found here.
