Planned Parenthood Activists Wear ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Garb to Protest Senate’s Health Care Bill at the Capitol

The protest was called the “People’s Filibuster of Trumpcare.”

Planned Parenthood and MoveOn.org on Tuesday staged a protest in front of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, and a group of activists dressed up as handmaids from The Handmaid’s Tale joined them to speak out against the Senate Republicans’ healthcare bill.

The Hill reporter Taylor Lorenz photographed the handmaids, who held Planned Parenthood signs and a large banner, and said they planned to shout “Shame!” at the GOP senators exiting the Capitol.

The protest was called the “People’s Filibuster of Trumpcare.” In addition to potentially causing 22 million people to lose their health insurance and cutting Medicaid, the GOP “Trumpcare” bill proposes a defunding of Planned Parenthood and would allow insurance companies to opt out of covering maternity care and contraception.

Senate Republican leadership on Tuesday announced they will be postponing a vote on the bill until after the July 4 weekend, due to lack of support.

Women dressed up as handmaids have been protesting at stage legislatures across the country, often about bills that regulate abortion or limit women’s access to health care. The Handmaid’s Tale, an adaptation of the 1985 novel, debuted in April as an original Hulu series. The fictional world depicts a dystopian society where women are forced to bear children to barren wives and husbands in upper society.
