Meryl Streep on Oprah for President, Trump’s Request to Screen ‘The Post’

“You could just keep it in Hollywood, you know, you could have The Rock as the joint chief of staff.”

Meryl Streep paid a visit to Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday to promote her latest film, The Post, and recounted her “wild night” at the Golden Globes on Sunday.

Streep, who was nominated for best actress for her portrayal of Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham in Steven Spielberg’s political news drama, told Kimmel of the awards show, “Oprah launched her presidential campaign, I think.”

When asked about her thoughts on Winfrey actually running for president in 2020, the actress wasn’t opposed. “Somebody from the stage [mentioned] Tom Hanks, and he seemed ready to go,” she added. “That would be a pretty good ticket. … You could just keep it in Hollywood, you know, you could have The Rock as the joint chief of staff, Harrison Ford running defense.”

Streep also joked with Kimmel about her reaction to Mariah Carey accidentally stealing her seat next to Spielberg after returning from a commercial break. Carey tweeted Sunday night that she grabbed the first seat she could find and apologized upon realizing she was sitting in Streep’s chair.

“Bitch stole my seat! There she was next to Spielberg, sucking up,” the actress quipped. “I said, ‘No, no, stay there.’ I said I’ll sit on your lap.”

On the topic of the timeliness of The Post, Streep told Kimmel she was unaware that President Trump’s team had requested to screen the film at the White House and Camp David.

“I’m sure I will hear about it,” she said, adding, “It’s a very patriotic movie, maybe he did like it and he didn’t see the parallels.”

The actress also participated in a speed-quiz during which Kimmel asked Streep to name all 20 her Oscar-nominated films in under 60 seconds (spoiler: she didn’t pass the test.)
