ITV Studios Takes Stake in ‘The Killing’ Producers’ New Danish Banner

Piv Bernth and Lars Hermann’s Apple Tree Productions was set up to make high-end Danish and Nordic drama.

U.K. TV giant ITV’s production unit ITV Studios has taken a minority stake in Danish scripted production company Apple Tree Productions, which was recently unveiled by Piv Bernth and Lars Hermann, the award-winning producers of international hits including The Killing and The Bridge.

Formerly head of drama and deputy head of drama at the Danish Broadcasting Corporation, Bernth and Hermann have set up Apple Tree Productions to create high-end Danish and Nordic drama.

As part of the agreement, ITV Studios Global Entertainment will have exclusive international distribution rights to all Apple Tree Productions series. The deal follows ITV Studios’ acquisitions of scripted production companies Tetra Media Studios in France and Italian indie Cattleya earlier this year.

“Since the phenomenal success of The Killing, the global appetite for the Nordics’ very distinctive style of storytelling has grown and grown,” said Maria Kyriacou, international president of ITV Studios. “Right at the heart of this boom have been Piv and Lars, and we are delighted that they will now be part of ITV Studios’ growing international network of drama producers.”

Added Bernth and Hermann: “We are all extremely excited about the partnership between ITV Studios and Apple Tree Productions and for the potential for collaboration with creative talent within ITV’s family of international scripted production companies.”
