Russia Box Office: Disney Film Becomes Top Local-Language Release of All Time

As of Sunday, ‘The Last Knight’ has grossed 1.68 billion rubles ($28.8 million), outperforming the previous champion, ‘Stalingrad.’

Disney’s Russian-language movie Posledny Bogatyr (The Last Knight) has become the highest-grossing local-language release of all time in the country, surpassing the previous champion, Stalingrad.

As of Sunday, The Last Knight has brought in 1.68 billion rubles ($28.8 million) in Russia, compared with Stalingrad’s 1.67 billion rubles, according to local industry journal Exhibitor’s Bulletin.

The movie was directed by Dmitriy Dyachenko, co-produced with local company Yellow, Black and White and released in Russia on Oct. 26 by Walt Disney Studios Sony Pictures Releasing, the two majors’ distributor for the local market.

In its opening weekend, The Last Knight beat Matilda, a controversial movie about the last Russian czar.

The Last Knight is a family fantasy, centered on young Muscovite Ivan, who is transplanted from contemporary Moscow into a fantasy world populated by characters from traditional Russian fairy tales.

Currently, The Last Knight holds the 12th place on the list of the biggest box-office draws in Russia.

The movie is Disney’s second film shot in the Russian language for the local market after Kniga masterov (The Book of Masters), which was released in October 2009 and grossed $10.8 million, according to local movie data base KinoPoisk.

Fyodor Bondarchuk’s Stalingrad, the previous champion, held the record for four years.
